Tracing Shadows is a work for sinfonietta which was completed in the fall of 2011. Over the course of its approximate 8’30” duration, the work explores the interplay between musical events and the resonances that they create. The title Tracing Shadows represents a poetic description of these ideas: resonances and sustains exist as afterimages of sonic impulses, the shadows of what once was. Attempting to define, to trace them, is futile. A shadow will change and morph from either movement of the source or the position of the sun. Over the course of the work, these sonic ghosts also shift and become the source of abstract musical development, taking on their own identity and pushing into the realm of tangibility.
Tracing Shadows was awarded a BMI Student Composer Award in 2012, and was the recipient of the Bowling Green State University Studio Arts Award for 2012.
