Program note:

This piece was written for Saxophonist Darek Samol.

The title “Refractures” is a portmanteau of “refraction” and “fractures.” This describes the essential nature of this two movement piece. The two movements each deal with essentially simple material that is shattered, as if it were being reflected through a broken mirror. The first movement deals with material frozen largely frozen in time, evolving through sporadic violent interruptions. The second movement presents a continuously shifting focus of the same material, much like refraction of light through materials of different density.
