Program note:

Written for the 2014 Nova Ensemble Commission competition at the University of North Texas. monoliths is a work which explores varied perspectives and viewpoints of a singular musical idea: the cascading set of gestures which begin the work. These gestures stand as musical monuments, and their behaviors permeate the work. Various levels of magnification are applied to the material, akin to viewing them up close or from miles away. This creates a spectrum between perception of active gesture and masses of sustained sound. Materials and behaviors of individual instruments remain for the most part distinct and identifiable, yet change in context to allow a complete image of the the virtual monoliths implied by the musical materials.
